The veterinary student assigned to your animal’s care will contact you by telephone on a daily basis while your animal is in the hospital. You may want to discuss the best time and phone number for the call, if you prefer a different form of communication such as email, or if you would rather be contacted less often. If at any time you do not feel that communication with the veterinary student is sufficient, you are welcome to ask that the attending veterinarian contact you directly.
If you have not heard from us regarding your animal’s progress, feel free to call the appropriate hospital. It is helpful if you can provide the operator with the names of the veterinary student and attending veterinarian providing your animal’s care.
Small Animal Hospital (cats and dogs): 573-882-7821
Equine Hospital (horses, mules and donkeys): 573-882-3513
Food Animal Hospital (fiber and food animals): 573-882-6857
Often, these questions can be answered by referring to the written discharge instructions sent home with you after your visit. If you have misplaced these instructions, you can either find them via the VHC Client Portal, or you can call the appropriate hospital and ask that these instructions be re-sent by mail, fax or email.
If you have a non-emergency question about changes in your animal’s condition, please call the appropriate hospital between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays and ask to speak with either the veterinary student or attending veterinarian who provided your animal’s care, or with the veterinary technician assigned to the service that provided your animal’s care. The name of the student and attending veterinarian can be found on your written discharge instructions.
Often, our students and veterinarians are tied up providing care to other patients. You may be asked to leave a contact number where you can be reached later in the day. You should also be aware that our students rotate between different hospital services and our veterinarians rotate between teaching and service responsibilities. Therefore, your call may be returned by someone you have not met from the same hospital service. Rest assured, the person returning your call will have access to all of your animal’s medical records and can track down any necessary information to address your concerns.
If your question is regarding a medical emergency, please let the operator know when you call.
