Safe anesthesia requires a knowledgeable and experienced team that tailors anesthesia protocols to the needs of your animal. Our team includes faculty veterinarians who have completed specialized training in anesthesia and are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. Our anesthesiology technicians focus on providing perioperative care for your animal.
There are unique considerations surrounding successful anesthesia on horses, cattle and other large animals. Their size alone makes them prone to difficulties that aren’t seen when smaller, lighter animals undergo anesthesia. We take full advantage of sedatives and analgesics, including local nerve blocks that can reduce the need for full anesthesia. When general anesthesia is required, we have the facilities and expertise to help your animal recover safely.
Our anesthesia team will assess your animal prior to anesthesia or sedation, monitor your animal during anesthesia, and make sure that pain is controlled and your animal is comfortable after a procedure is completed. Your animal will be monitored throughout sedation and anesthesia procedures. Although it is possible to anesthetize and monitor an animal without specialized equipment, we frequently take advantage of the latest technology and advanced training to provide excellent care, including:
- Pulse oximetry
- Capnography
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Blood gas, electrolyte and hemoglobin measurement
- Electrocardiography
- Anesthetic agent monitors
- Mechanical ventilators
- Anesthesia machines with precision vaporizers
- Regional and local anesthesia
- Specialized, padded induction and recovery areas
