Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the health and diseases of the eyes. We deal with issues such as blindness, cataracts, glaucoma, injury or infection of the eye, and more.
The Ophthalmology Service of the MU Veterinary Health Center offers referral services to practicing veterinarians in Missouri and surrounding states, and we would be happy to work with your veterinarian to improve your animal’s ocular comfort and restore vision. We provide complete state-of-the-art veterinary ophthalmology diagnostic, medical and surgical services for dogs, cats, horses, cattle, camelids and other species.
Highlights of Service:
- We offer cataract removal surgery that can restore vision.
- We are the only ophthalmology service in Missouri that offers endolaser cyclophotocoagulation for glaucoma.
- We can use electrodiagnostic testing (electroretinogram or ERG) to assess the function of the eye’s retina.
- We are often able to identify the cause of blindness in pets, be it a disease of the eye itself or a disorder that prevents the brain from interpreting information from the eye.
- The Ophthalmology Service maintains a prestigious national reputation: Section leader Elizabeth Giuliano, DVM, MS, is president of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists board of regents, and our residents annually win numerous awards.
