Neurology

Our team is always ready to help with emergency neurological problems such as a foal with seizures or an adult horse that is struggling to stand up. We treat horses with neurological diseases including equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), equine herpes myeloencephalitis (EHV), West Nile virus, botulism, meningitis and traumatic diseases affecting the nervous system.

We work to identify the cause of the underlying problem and to provide the best and most appropriate treatment, while at the same time attending to the nursing, supportive needs of the patient. Our facilities are uniquely equipped to deal with down horses or those having difficulty standing.

Highlights of Service:

  • Equipped and staffed 365 days a year to provide the most up-to-date emergency and critical care for horses and foals with neurological problems
  • Stalls equipped with sling and hoist to assist horses that have difficulty standing up and special entrances for down horses
  • Availability of specialists to provide general anesthesia to help manage neurologically compromised horses and foals (to assist with patient movement, radiography and myelography)
  • Advanced diagnostic capabilities include computed tomographic (CT) scanning of the brain for horses and foals, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI) scanning of the brain for foals and collection of cerebrospinal fluid from patients when indicated
