How We Helped Armani

After she discovered burglars had brutally beaten her dog Armani, owner Jessica Robertson rushed him to the MU Veterinary Health Center. The 9-year-old cockapoo was diagnosed with multiple skull fractures, brain swelling, and bleeding in and around his brain. Soon he lost the ability to swallow and had to be put on a ventilator.

Battling to save his life, veterinarians in the Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service stayed by Armani’s side day and night for nearly a week. That constant care and attention, plus Armani’s willingness to fight, paid off. After only 10 days he was able to go home to his family.

Armani never gave up. Neither do we.

How We Helped Vanessa

There’s never a good time for your pet to get sick, but on holidays it can be especially challenging to get the critical help you need. When Strafford, Missouri, residents Rick Albaugh and Mark Chambers’ dog Vanessa suddenly developed acute liver failure, their local veterinarians referred them to the MU Veterinary Health Center after they could do no more to help her.

Even during the Fourth of July, board-certified veterinarians from the MU Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service were ready to provide the constant intensive care the 7-year-old basset hound needed. Although she came perilously close to death, Vanessa is now back to her normal, happy self.

No matter when you need us, we’ll be here.

How We Helped Flight

Larry and Terry Lembach of Miller County consider Flight, their 8-year-old beagle, a family member. They were terrified when she suddenly started coughing and struggling to breathe. They made a frantic trip to the Veterinary Health Center, where she was quickly put on a mechanical ventilator to help her breathe.

The Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service's expertise led to a quick identification of the cause: rat poison. The Lembachs later realized a neighbor had left poison in a shared garage. Although oxygen deprivation can result in brain damage and blindness, Flight recovered fully and was home in three days, thanks to her veterinarians’ quick thinking and the hospital’s life-saving equipment.

State-of-the-art technology. Unsurpassed expertise.

The MU Veterinary Health Center is the only 24-hour veterinary emergency hospital in our region and is one of 24 Level 1 small animal emergency hospitals in the United States, as certified by the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.

Our Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Service is staffed by at least one licensed veterinarian and skilled veterinary technicians 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We can perform critical diagnostics at any time, and stabilization, intensive care hospitalization, isolation and around-the-clock monitoring are provided as needed. Complex diagnostic and surgical procedures are also performed for emergency cases.

To continue providing state-of-the-art care to Missouri pet owners, additional funds are needed. Your support will allow us to hire key personnel, purchase life-saving and patient care equipment, and maintain pet-friendly and efficient facilities, thus ensuring that we are able to continue this crucial service without interruption.
